Yanks Overcome Rough Night by Rodriguez

Rodriguez had never made three errors in a game, but fortunately for him, there was a sinkerball pitcher on the mound. Chien-Ming Wang (10-4) worked seven innings, using his heavy sinker to get 15 groundball outs.

“He bailed everybody out tonight,” Torre said.

Most of all, he bailed out Rodriguez, who went 0 for 4 and whose errors — all on throws — did not lead to any runs. Rodriguez has 16 errors over all, his highest total in a season since 2001.

Wang made the lead stand, despite Rodriguez’s errors in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. In the fourth, his wide throw allowed Adrián Beltre to reach first base safely. On a fielder’s choice in the fifth, Rodriguez’s throw pulled Cairo off second base. And in the seventh, he threw wildly to first to allow Beltre to reach base.

But the last-place Mariners wasted each chance. In the fourth, Beltre was erased on a double play. In the fifth, Beltre grounded out with the bases loaded to end a scoreless inning. And in the seventh, Willie Bloomquist got caught in a rundown after Beltre reached first on the error, ending the inning.

Giambi helped Wang in the fifth by launching a hanging slider into the third deck in right for his 28th homer. Giambi is on pace for 50, which would be a career high.

Giambi has charged a surprisingly resourceful offense, considering injuries to three everyday players. But the biggest reason for last night’s victory — and most of them, of course — is pitching.

With Wang, Mike Mussina and Randy Johnson, the Yankees are the first team in the majors to have three pitchers with 10 victories. Tonight they audition another fifth starter, Sidney Ponson, and their confidence could not be much greater.

“We’re giving everything we’ve got,” Torre said, “and with Sidney tomorrow, I think he’s going into the best possible scenario.”
