In the waning days of August, there is no pitcher in the major leagues with more victories than Chien-Ming Wang. It is a staggering thought, but it is a fact.
Wang improved his record to 16-5 in the first game of yesterday’s day-night doubleheader at Yankee Stadium, allowing three hits over seven and two-thirds innings to lead the Yankees to a 2-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
The only other pitcher with 16 victories through yesterday afternoon was Roy Halladay of the Toronto Blue Jays, a fitting parallel to Wang.
“He’s real similar to Halladay in that they always throw that heavy sinker,” said the Yankees’ Derek Jeter, who had three hits. “He’s going to confront you. It’s not like he’s nibbling around the strike zone. He’s throwing his pitch, and it’s tough to hit the ball in the air.”
The Tigers, who have the best record in the American League, had almost no luck doing that. They had two flyouts against Wang, compared with 13 groundouts. Scott Proctor and Mariano Rivera finished the shutout.

Wang may not win the American League Cy Young award, but with his record, his 3.66 earned run average and his team-leading 187 innings pitched, he is in the conversation. It is quite a leap for a pitcher in his first full major league season.
“I knew he was good, but how good, you don’t know,” the Yankees’ pitching coach Ron Guidry said. “But when you’ve got a guy that’s capable of pitching like he has with the stuff that he has, with a team like he has, he can be pretty deadly.”
Asked about the possibility of winning the Cy Young, Wang said, “I never think of that.” He is — nominally, at least — the Yankees’ No. 3 starter, after Randy Johnson and the injured Mike Mussina. That status could be helping him to succeed.
“I still think a major reason he’s had success is because he’s got Randy to look up to, and Moose, and of course Mariano,” Manager Joe Torre said. “He’s doing all the big-game stuff, but it’s still not fair for us to say it’s automatic.”

The Tigers did not advance a runner past first base until the eighth inning, when Curtis Granderson doubled Neifi Pérez to third with two outs.
Normally, Torre said, he would remove a starter after a walk in the eighth inning. He added that he was conscious of Wang’s workload; Wang had never thrown more than 150 1/3 innings in a season, and he experienced shoulder trouble last summer.
But Wang was pitching for the first time in seven days, so Torre said he felt comfortable leaving him in for 109 pitches, matching his season high. Proctor needed one pitch to escape the jam, getting Magglio Ordóñez to fly to left on a slider to end the inning.

That was Wang’s plan, too, as it always is. He throws a hard fastball — 96 miles an hour — and can also throw a slider. But mostly, he trusts his sinker, a pitch that rarely lets him down.
“He’s sort of like a knuckleball pitcher,” Torre said. “They know what’s coming and it still doesn’t do them any good, because the degree of sink varies from pitch to pitch. It’s so tough to gauge him.”
Through 28 starts, the numerical gauge tells it all: 16 victories, tied with Halladay, behind nobody.
